Ronald Reagan was the fortieth president of the United States. The Republican served two terms during his presidency, after a career as being and actor, and governor of California. His first election he won against Jimmy Carter in 1980. In 1984, against former vice president Walter F Mondale, Reagan won in a landslide with 525 electoral votes, more than any other presidential candidate in the nations history. As Chief of State Reagan was a great example to the country on what a citizen should be. He brought back the trumpeters that announced the President and First Lady and also greeted foreign leaders.

An example is when he met defected Polish ambassador Spasowski in December of 1982. Reagan would hold press conferences, as such when he discussed the governments role in fighting the AIDS disease. He also held many other conferences, like in October, 1987, when he told why taxes should be increased. He would present medals and awards. He presented John Young, the astronaut, with the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, as well as Nasa's Distinguished Service Medal.

He also presented the Medal of Honor to Roy Benavidez on February 24, 1981. As Chief Executive, President Reagan was in charge of all government workers in the executive branch. He nominated a variety of cabinet officers with names including Alexander M Haig, Donald Reagan, James A Baker, William F Smith, as well as others. He also nominated five other people to the Supreme Court.

Ronald Reagan gave the least number of pardons for a president in the twentieth century with 406 pardons. One of the presidents duties is being Chief Diplomat. Many times Reagan met with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. They formed a treaty to eliminate all U. S. and Soviet ground-launched nuclear missiles with ranges of 500 to 5, 500 kilometers.

The treaty took affect in 1988. Reagan also made an agreement with Iran. The U. S. would sell arms to Iran resulting in the release of three hostages. Though the hostages were freed Reagan lost reputation for selling to terrorist-supporting countries.

He also supported anti-communist guerillas in Central-America, Asia and Africa. As Chief Guardian of the Economy, Ronal Reagan was very concerned with unemployment. He thought that the former president Jimmy Carter had failed to deal affectively with inflation and unemployment. During the first half of 1980, the inflation rate was about 15 per cent, and about 71 / 2 per cent of the nation's workers had no jobs. Reagan called for a lowering of the minimum wage law in the case of teenagers to reduce unemployment among young people. To stimulate the economy, he proposed to slash federal income taxes by up to 30 per cent.

He also promised to balance the federal budget, claiming that a tax cut would increase economic activity so much that tax revenues would rise, not fall. He was also going to spend more money on the military and less on other things. Congress passed all of Reagan's proposed tax cuts. This cut $ 33 Billion after one year, with more cuts scheduled later. It was the largest tax cut in U.

S. history. Unfortunately the tax revenues fell, many companies went bankrupt, and unemployment soared. The federal budget reached a record-low level of $ 195 billion, with about 11 % of the labor force unemployed, the lowest it had been since 1941. Congress adopted a tax increase of $ 92 billion dollars, the largest tax increase in history. This lessened this deficit dramatically.

One of the most well-known titles of the president is Commander in Chief. As Commander in Chief, Reagan was in charge of all the military. He was president during the Cold War, being totally anti-communist. It finally led to the tearing down of the Berlin Wall. Cuba communists were trying to gain much influence on Grenada. Reagan did not support this so he invaded Grenada.

The U. S. sent 1, 200 troops but was met with strong resistance. When the invasion force grew to about 7, 000, the defenders had to surrender.

Iran had also been attacking U. S. ships in the Persian Gulf. After contention in the waters, the U.

S. finally attacked Iranian oil platforms. They also sank many other Iranian ships. The affect was that Iran attacks dropped drastically. The final title a president receives in Chief Legislator. In the 1983 state of the union address, Reagan greatly explained his concern with unemployment.

As president Reagan would sign bills, like the gun lobby-backed legislation that weakened federal law weapons. He also passed a measure that banned cop-killing bullets as well as handguns that could evade metal detectors. He also signed the Missing Children Act and the Victim and Witness act both on October 12, 1982. Many other bills included, increasing minimum drinking age to 21, amendments to the social security act, nuclear waste policy act, and surface transportation assistance act.

One act he did veto was the Water Quality Act in 1987. The Water Quality act was an act amending the Federal Water Pollution Control Act to make NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) requirements appropriate to storm water discharges. Ronald Reagan was clearly a wonderful president. He fulfilled out all of his duties well. When the economy grew weak, he built it up again. He did his best to keep the peace.

Everyone loved Reagan, and that I believe that he was one the greatest presidents our country has seen.
