Euthanasia is the act or practice of ending the life of an individual suffering from a terminal illness or an incurable condition. There are many ill people being treated in hospitals and many different medical facilities. Do the patients families or doctors have the right to decide when to end their lives? Or is this decision left to the tormented patient to make? When making such a decision, things such as financial considerations for the family of the patient or the hospital should be valued against human life being disposed of.
Another issue is the patient feeling that he or she has become a burden on his or her family thinking it is best for him or her to commit euthanasia. There are two types of euthanasia, voluntary and non-voluntary. Euthanasia is voluntary when the patient himself asks to be put out of his misery. Non-voluntary is when he is forced to do so under medical supervision. In euthanasia, it is not about giving the patient the right to die. In fact its about the right to kill that patient.
Euthanasia supporters often argue that it is permissible to take human life when necessary under severe conditions such as self-defense. However, history has taught us that taking human life is sadistic. That is the reason why only two countries in the world today permit euthanasia as a legal action. That is why almost all societies, even non-religious ones, for thousands of years have considered euthanasia a crime. Euthanasia supporters usually argue that because modern medicine and scientific technology can predict the life expectancy of a particular patient, they have the right to decide when a patient should be euthanized.
Some people diagnosed as terminally ill do not die for years, if at all, from the diagnosed condition. The main argument between euthanasia supporters and adversaries is that the patient is in excruciating pain, and that his suffering should be put to an end, his life would be meaningless if he continues to endure such suffering. Painkillers can solve unbearable pain, painkillers can nearly eliminate most if not all physical as well as psychological pain. Adversaries miss the point that when one kills for self-defense they are saving an innocent life. With euthanasia no one's life is being saved, life is only taken. That is why many people from different cultures think that euthanasia is morally and ethically inadmissible.
In a nutshell, I believe that there comes a time when continued attempts to cure are not kind, wise, or medically correct. That's where hospitals and medical facilities, can be of such help. Serious efforts should be placed on making the patient's remaining time comfortable. Then, all interventions should be directed to alleviating pain and other symptoms as well as to the provision of emotional and spiritual support for both the patient and the patient's loved ones.
