... ake. But just think of what you would do if you were in their position; if you had the immense responsibilities and such things to acquire their attention. When thinking of wars, we do not bother to consider all the effort that goes into fighting to defend our country and keep our freedoms.

The aspect we consider most would probably be the front line. The work the soldiers themselves put into the war effort. Being on the firing line, with bullets, grenades, bombs, and the output of almost any weapon you can think of, being hurled at you. Trying to hold on to your own life, while at the same time trying to prevent the enemy from holding on to his. However, that is hardly the only part to a war. We often leave out most of the others who contribute their time and lives to protecting our nations freedoms.

The officers who train young men and women for the service. Their job is to instill discipline and common sense in the minds of the future soldiers that they train. When a young man or woman enters the military, their superior officers oversee them. The job of those officers is to retain the discipline and common sense instilled in those young men and women who have volunteered, or sometimes been required their services. Those officers carry a large amount of responsibility.

They are put in charge of a group of soldiers, and are expected to keep them in order, and take responsibility for whatever happens to their group. The people that are in political positions; the president, also commander in chief, plays a large role in a war related situation. He gets the ultimate job of telling everybody what to do, when to do it, and accepting a large portion of the responsibility for anything that goes wrong. However, the most overlooked is not the president, or other political and military figures.

It is the people who work behind the scenes to support the nation. Raising funds, volunteering for industrial purposes, volunteering for medical purposes, being an encouragement to the men and women of our armed forces. These people play a very important role, yet we pay almost no attention to them. Another question that arises with wars would be how and why do such forms of dissension come up? In the past Imperialism has played a major role, such is the case with the World Wars. When countries try to take power over other countries for economical or military benefits.

Other reasons might be to ward off enemies; such is the case of the war we are currently in. To eliminate terrorists and stabilize once unstable nations. The effects of a war on a nation. They can be either helpful or harmful, depending on the effect. This topic was covered to an extent earlier in this paper, but I will go over it again. Wars cause much destruction.

They cause death, losses of many kinds. They are able to rip whole nations apart. Yet, at the same time, wars can have some good effects. It strengthens the moral of men and women for years to come.

It builds up the economy, speeds up production and innovation. It brings on reforms, changes in government, and can help to create a stronger nation. You might wonder how I write so much about war, yet try to insert patriotism in it as well. I have already explained how a form of patriotism is brought from sacrifice. However, there is far more to it that just coming home with a medal of honor and three purple hearts. Patriotism is not just about sacrifice, it is also about dedication, integrity, and liberty.

Our forefathers fought so they could have freedom from the imperialism that surrounded them. So that they could break away from the religious pressures, and worship God in a way that they thought was right. Many of them gave their lives for this cause. The fight to give equality to all men and abolish slavery. The fight to bring down the imperialists and national monopolies that threatened the very thing that was fought for by our forefathers. The fight to bring down corrupt empires and corrupt leaders.

Indeed the people who were and are involved in this could and should be considered patriots for their services. But at the same time, so should the people who are on the front-line, but not the same one as the soldiers. These people are on a social and political front-line. Fighting battles within the nation itself. Even just the citizens can play a major role in how things are conducted. We can vote for people who we believe will instate policies that meet our needs and are right.

We can petition for reforms that we believe to be necessary. We cannot display disapproval for the work our troops have to do overseas, and support them as best we can from our homes. Patriotism is also used in a social sense. Patriotism is Voting on Election Day instead of sitting around acting as if it doesnt really matter, showing respect for our nations flag, and for our Veterans whether alive or deceased.

Patriotism was when during World War 2, when the women went to work at the factories during the times that the men were over fighting in Europe. Patriotism is standing and taking off your hat when the flag and military units pass by. At the same time, it is very un-patriotic to dishonor our flag or veterans. It is also very unpatriotic when large corporations move their companies over seas so they can get the labor cheaper, make a bigger profit for themselves, or undermine other corporations. I believe that it is also disrespectful when we purposefully cause damage to the national currency. Smashing coins and writing on dollar bills displays very little patriotism.

Webster hit it right on the head. Love and devotion for ones country. That does not mean we have to go off and get killed if we are True Americans. Anyone can be a patriot, even in ways that do not appear to make a large difference.
