The Western World is a constantly changing machine, steadily moving forward in technology, in quality of life, and in culture. These changes are usually controlled and consistent. The terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11 th changed all of that. In one morning, four airplanes changed America's quality of life and culture.
Americans believe it's country was invulnerable to an attack. Two Generations have passed since the last attack on American soil, and that was thousands of miles of the mainland in Hawaii. The attack on Pearl Harbor changed the face of America, just as September 11 th has changed the face of America today. The biggest national security problem America faced before September 11 th was illegal immigrants. Post 9 / 11 America saw the biggest National Security lockdown in our history.
A nation wide panic bankrupted numerous airlines who couldn't find anybody to fly. Tourism took a dive along with our economy. Americans lost jobs and the country flinched every time the White House increased the terrorism warning level. Every major city believed themselves to be the next big target. Fear spread through the states like wildfire. While pain understandably took hold across the nation.
New York's pain is far more specific. It was the atmosphere in the city, the look on peoples faces, and the anger everyone had for the terrorists responsible. As I walked to the coffee stand right outside World Trade Center building number one, around 8: 05 in the morning right before the stock market bell rang a plane hit the building in which my Uncle Angelo, a stockbroker on the Merchandise stock exchange, works. He called me and told me what had happened and shock along with uncertainty filled my mind. At first I believe it was some kind of tragic accident, not thinking it could be anything more. I was still talking to my uncle while climbing the steps to the exchange floor when he heard that the second plane had crashed into the World Trade center building.
When I questioned my uncle about his reaction and whether or not they had changed since the first plane hit he said his biggest concern wasn't about the towers or himself, but instead wanted to make sure I was okay. Thankfully I was and was able to relive him of his concern since I soon made it to his side at the stock exchange. After he found out that the plane coaches were an act of terrorism he said he stood there watching the buildings burn, which to him became a symbol for what Americans going to have to engage itself in, War. To this day when my uncle is asked about that day and his response is that he is grateful for the strength of our nation and it's ability to pick up it's people and push forward despite a large hostile setback, like the terrorists acts of September 11 th.
When talking with my mother about 9 / 11 although she was in a different place at the time, her reactions were similar. when she let me miss school that day, to possibly find a career for the future, the Stock Exchange, she had no idea the possible danger I would be placed in. As every American can remember, the hours of this terrorist's acts were very confusing and hectic. Her inability to exactly what was going on and where I was made the ordeal all the more confusing and terrifying. She said that when she found out the stock exchange was located directly next to the World Trade centers that she felt her heart drop to her stomach with a feeling of emptiness she had never before felt.
