Women in Ancient Greece were always very bust people. Whether it was caring for children or taking to their households, they almost never had free time on their hands. How women were treated back then is definitely different from the strong women of todays! Nevertheless, for one thing, we are really lucky that we live today because women in Ancient Greece worked hard labor and tough times on a day-to-day basis ALWAYS! When a baby was born and presented to the father, mostly girls were rejected and put to death usually by drowning!

However, if the baby girl was accepted she was put to work almost as soon as she was physically able to. Not including young girls in Sparta, children of that nature (girls) everyday, were to help their mothers considering housework and learning to be a good housewife themselves once they were to be married at whatever pretty age their parents thought necessary. One Athenian woman on education had once stated, teaching young girls to read and write? It is like feeding more poison to a vile snake! Much like women, girls were totally and strictly forbidden to leave the households.

Surprisingly, Spartan girls went to school between the ages of six and seven. During that time then on through the age of 18, they were taught wrestling, gymnastics, and combat skills along with many other academic subjects such as reading and math. All and all, basically, girls especially in Athens had no education whatsoever and therefore, never really had any major jobs other than to have children when they grew up. Despite the fact that most people during the Ancient Greek times thought that women especially girls were hopeless never really thought that as boys were at school and in the gymnasium all the time, girls did and accomplish much more during their young ages!

In order to have legitimate children to bear, women must have been married first. If an unmarried woman under 18 was to get pregnant, she would have been considered a shameful soul and most likely unable to be trusted to be a responsible wife by her father and lover if any after discovering pregnancy. In Athens, a girl was considered at the verge of the pretty age, (the age of proper marriage) at age 15 to 18. Despite the young age, they would usually be assigned by their father men at age 30 or older. Once they had become a couple, the husband was given the so-called job of controlling the newly wed wife then on through her death. It may seem that the reason for marriage in those days was for love and happiness of both man and woman, but the main priority was to have children.

However, children were especially important for their ability to be helpful daily and to be the one to be their fathers heir to any throne if any. Marriages were often established by the father of the bride, who was very strict indeed, by the man his daughter was marrying. Previously, before the marriage, there were many ceremonies for both future husband and wife accompanied by feasts set up and reputable by the both sides of families. One notable ceremony for the bride was when she would give up all of her childhood toys to the goddess Athena in a temple that would worship. This would signify that she had grown out of such trivial things she enjoyed or might have in childhood. Marriages were often VERY important accountably for the fact that most of the time; hopefully, those two lovers would be together for the rest of their life!

Like previously said women were always busy people and had many roles in everyday life. They were to, after married, have children both supportive and helpful so that they could make life easier on the part of the woman. Childcare, spinning, and weaving were the womans main priority if not pregnant or sick. It usually depended on how many slaves a woman or family would have that would rely on how much work a woman would have on a day-to-day basis. For example, if a family had five slaves in all helping them (for every family in Athens had at least two) than the work would most likely be minimal depending on how the slaves were in stature. This means that if a slave or two were ill, than the amount of work would be more for a women or girl.

Colorful rugs spun by women were most often used in a front room parlor to keep out drafts during winter. However, if the husband liked the design, he would sometimes even hang the rug as a decoration in his own working room! The roles of women everyday were usually made up of hard labor but success was made everyday for sure! Womens rights were certainly few but always favored all the time. Although they were not to leave the house, they were privileged to go to all festivals and parties if invited but most importantly to go to worship gods from time to time.

They could though serve as a priestess in temples in public but other than that, that was only a real job available to them, if any. They could not own land if they lived in Athens and were completely controlled by men before and after marriage. Firstly, they were controlled by their father before marriage and then given the hot potato method and passed himself over to the husband then there after marriage. It was totally different however in Sparta. They were allowed to own as much land as they wanted for there was no limit. They could also, if their husband was gone for an elongated period of time she could legally take another husband just as easily.

As you can see, rights of women in Athens most importantly were not many but always very important to the woman because she had them. It was the Spartan women who had received the most rights throughout their life. In Sparta, as said before, school started for children at ages six or seven to learn not only academic skills but self-defense like wrestling and combat skills. The people of Sparta also thought that it was really important for girls to be well fit along with flexible so they also taught gymnastics. In order to go home, around age 18, the women would have to go thorough a series of tests all mentally, academically, and physically before she was told whether or not she was ready to be wed and proceed with the rest of her life. Women in Sparta after getting married, when having children, were to be helped by nurses during labor.

And then on the nurses would take to caring for the children for the childrens childhood. Before the women were married, the day before, they were abducted by their husbands, have their heads shaved, and put in a bath of herbal concoctions and oils. She was then married the next day, and spent only a few days with her husband before he was to go away for quite a while. In Sparta, citizen women were free to move around as they pleased and were given a great deal of freedom as the men were always away for lengthened period of time and did not live at home.

As a matter of fact, sometimes, women in Sparta had even more privileges than men due to the men constantly being away from home and at war. I found marriage very interesting while writing my report. One of the most interesting details I came across was one on the Athenian marriages. When after going through the ceremony of marriage, the husband was to take his wife over his shoulder and bring her over to the carriage that had originally taken them to the wedding area. If he had failed to however, they couple would not be considered officially wed and a couple by Athenian law.

Most of the time, when this had happened, the couple would split after that being totally embarrassed. The woman would be humiliated because she would then become self-aware of her stature thinking of herself as overweight as would any woman during this process. The men would most likely feel weak and never show his face to his family or his brides for a long time. This rarely happened but was always devastating to both people when this problem came. That is why I chose this as my most interesting fact!

As you can tell, the lives of the many Greek women were neither easy nor simple in the slightest way. If anything, I felt the lives of the women in Greece were astonishing, somewhat unusual, but definitely interesting. Women have and did portray both Athenian and Spartan the fact that all women are strong and still are to this very day!
