... walking out of the woods when a thick arm suddenly grabbed her around the neck. Ryanna gasped and struggled, but it was no use, the man was too strong. The man tightened his grip, closing off her windpipe.

Ryanna tried to lever the arm with her own, but she was not violent by nature and was not very strong. She kicked the man hard in the shins, but the vice like grip still would not budge. Ryanna was beginning to see stars from lack of oxygen. In her panic she blindly shot spells everywhere.

The grip became tighter still, and Ryanna's fragile body could not withstand the lack of air, she fainted. When she woke up she felt a pair of lips upon hers. She first reaction was to thrash out with her arms. She caught the stranger in the head and he backed off, obviously in pain.

It was then that Ryanna realised that this man was not her attacker. He was tall and fit, with a very handsome face and an appearance that was not at all bearlike. Im so sorry, stammered Ryanna. I thought you were someone else.

Its quite alright, your reaction was understandable. Id have done the same, the man said. What happened to the man who attacked me? Ryanna asked.

I took care of him, I promise he will not give you any trouble. Ryanna did not ask any further, for some reason she felt strangely shy around the man. He was wearing a magicians outfit with a sword hanging from his belt. He had dark brown hair streaked with highlights, a firm chin and wide, square shoulders. Ryanna felt a tinge of attraction and had to turn her head to hide her blush.

The strangers name was Gyllias. He was an important officer in the army. Gyllias escorted Ryanna to the inn she was staying at and she invited him to dinner. They chatted throughout the meal until Gyllias decided to leave. Ryanna followed him to the door with his coat. He thanked her and kissed her on the cheek before walking off into the street.

Leaving Ryanna standing at the door with a bright red hue on her face. She slept well that night. Ryanna and Gyllias met regularly over the next few days and Ryanna's attraction grew. Gyllias was charming and intelligent, and Ryanna felt comfortable to tell him everything about her in return he told her everything about him.

He was twenty-five also an orphan, his parents were killed by a band of bandits during a robbery. He avenged his parents and joined the army, where he worked his way up to the top. It was the last day before the troops began marching. Gyllias invited Ryanna to his home to say goodbye. Ryanna was just as eager to see him again, so she quickly but on coat and hurried to Gyllias manor. She arrived on the doorstep and knocked three times.

Gyllias opened the door and she walked in. as soon as he closed the door Gyllias grabbed her waist and kissed her deeply and passionately. Surprised as she was, Ryanna kissed him back. They moved and sat down on a sofa. Gyllias kiss moved down to her neck and found the small, straight scar. Ryanna surrendered herself completely to him.

Gyllias hands found the zipper of her dress, and as he undid it he whispered in Ryanna's ear. I love you The next day Uncle Negro gave Ryanna some exciting news. The general had agreed to take her as her uncles assistant. They were both was ecstatic, but Ryanna was for a totally different reason than her uncle. She was going to see Gyllias again. The march took several weeks.

Not that anyone cared. Nobody in the army, not even the General, liked fighting. They only did what had to be done and relied heavily on spell casters on the battlefield. During the weeks Ryanna and Gyllias were constantly in the company of each other. Uncle Negro noticed but said nothing.

He was happy for Ryanna. While Ryanna, who had never had anyone to love besides her uncle, was having the time of her life, and their high ranking positions didnt give them much to do, so all was well. On the third day of the eleventh week, battle commenced. The barbarians were ferocious and fearless fighters, but they did not have an army of magicians. Wave after wave of barbarians fell in a hail of spells, until battle ceased for the day. On the next day the barbarians proposed a challenge.

They said that if the Royal Army could beat their monster, they would surrender, but if not, the Royal army had to leave them to be. Show us your monster. Was the Generals response. The barbarians released a gigantic monster, over a hundred feet tall, with red, scaly hide and red, fiery eyes. It awed the soldiers but it held a special meaning to Ryanna.

Thats the same kind of monster that killed my parents. Ryanna said to the General. But you killed the other one. I did, yes.

Then youll be able to kill this one? I can try. So it was decided, Ryanna was to attempt to slay the monster. Before her battle, Gyllias came to her.

I want you to know, he said. No matter what happens out there, Ill always love you, will you marry me? Yes, of course. Ryanna said and kissed him. Uncle Negro also wished her luck, and whispered in her ear, Use the pendant. She thanked them all and stepped out of the ranks.

The monster looked at her and roared as both armies retreated. Suddenly, without warning, the monster attacked. A spout of flames came from deep within its throat at Ryanna. She held out her palm and there was a blinding flash. A beam of light shot from her hand and countered the fire. The monster roared, annoyed.

Ryanna now attacked, her long, golden hair stood on end as she performed the same spell her father used on the monster. A gust of wind swept up and a beam of energy shot from the heavens. The monster let out a howl of pain and fell. Ryanna continued the spell. The monsters howl became lower and lower until it stopped. This was Ryanna's chance, she gathered energy for one, final, finishing blow.

A tail swept out of nowhere and knocked her off her feet. She landed hard on her back and was immediately faced with the monsters foot. Her hands shot up, sending a wall of energy to stop her getting crushed. The pendant around Ryanna's neck suddenly glowed. It sent a massive beam of light at the monster. It was lifted into the air where it vaporized.

Ryanna shook her head, dazed. She gripped the pendant with her hand and silently prayed for her mother and father, then she walked back to a cheering crowd.
