The monster roared, its fury sparked a thousand tongues of fire from its hide. With one almighty sweep it sent Ryanna's father flying over the top of the volcano, the wind ceased, the spell failed, and the monster drew itself to its full one hundred feet once again. NOOOOOOOO! Ryanna's mother screamed in agony and despair, and with a snarl that sounded more like a wolf than a woman, she dashed forwards, a shower of electricity falling around her. With a thrust of her arm and a word, she hurled a massive bolt of thunder at the monster.

It was knocked off its feet and landed with an earth shattering crash. Ryanna's mother, however, had performed a spell that was beyond her power and endurance. She fell and landed on her back, blood flowing from her nose, ears, eyes and mouth at the same time. She remained there motionlessly until little sixyearold Ryanna toddled over. To her, it was just all a magic show that her parents put on for her, as they always did. Her mother looked at her through her bloody eyes while she smiled delightedly and clapped the tiny little hands.

Her mother smiled back weakly, and with tremendous effort, she pulled out a small, silver, beautifully decorated pendant. Ryanna's big, emerald, green eyes opened wide as she slipped it around her neck. Guard this well, my child, she said, and they were the last words she ever spoke. Ryanna waited patiently for her mother to speak again. When she didnt, Ryanna bent over and gently stroke her stone cold, once beautiful face. Still there was no response, and Ryanna began to panic.

She squeezed her mothers arm as hard as her small hands could, and pulled on her hair. Ryanna began to scream. MOTHER! she cried in between sobs. The dead woman did not answer, but there was a loud, deep grunt.

Ryanna turned to see the monster rise, now so angry that its eyes turned livid red. With a stamp of its feet, the monster split the mountainside and Ryanna had just enough time to dodge as her mothers lifeless body disappeared into a bubbling lake of lava. The monster turned on her, red eyes flashing, and with an earsplitting roar, it shot a huge jet of flames at the child. As the hot, burning mass came at her, something clicked inside Ryanna, it was a terrible rage, and a thirst for vengeance. Without knowing what she was doing, Ryanna let out a cry and forced the fire back deep into the monsters stomach with a powerful thought. The monster stood for a moment, bloated like s balloon, before exploding with such a force that Ryanna was carried by the shockwave down to the bottom of the volcano.

She landed on her back. She heard a loud crack and felt great pain, then all things went black. She was falling falling falling Ryanna woke with a start. Her nightgown was drenched in sweat. Her mind was still filled with the horrible nightmare, the one of her parents last moments.

Now twenty, Ryanna was as normal a young woman as can be, apart from the fact that she was an orphan. She was pretty, even beautiful, with the emerald green eyes of her mother and shiny blond hair of her father. She had a quiet, peaceful nature that has made her a lot of friends in the small village. However she possessed something others didnt her extensive knowledge in the sacred art of White Magic. It awoke in her when her parents died.

The grief, pain and the rage she experienced on the day combined let out her inherited magic in a great outburst. A few years of training from her uncle, the village magician, gave her control of her power. She was unhappy, however, because people only became her friend because of her surpassing abilities. Ryanna pushed the crumpled covers aside and got out of bed.

She headed down to the kitchen for a drink, but just as she stepped out of her room something big and furry lunged at her. Ryanna screamed. It was Tornado, the huge black sheep dog her uncle owned. She giggled as the animals cold, wet nose tickled her neck. She and Tornado had grown up together, as though they were twins. Ryanna, are you alright?

I heard you scream, her uncle called sleepily from his bedroom. Yes, Im fine Uncle Negro, Tornado startled me Ryanna called back. Can you keep it down please, some people have to work tomorrow, Uncle Negro said with a grunt. Ryanna giggled again.

Yes Uncle Negro, she said as she scratched Tornado behind the ears. True, her uncle was also the village healer, and he needed all his sleep to conserve his energy. Ryanna tiptoed into the kitchen and drank a glass of water. Then she went back to her bedroom and lay awake in bed. The happiness in her had evaporated and she was hit once again with by the last memories of her dream. When she banished the monster she had also been close to death.

The fall broke three of her ribs and knocked her out for seven days. It was amazing that a child of six suffering from such injuries survived, and now the only trace of that injury was a small, straight scar on the side of her neck. Finally Ryanna gave in to her fatigue and fell asleep clutching her mothers pendant. The next day turned out to be far from normal. An urgent message arrived for Uncle Negro from the royal army. It said that the King intended to go to war with a barbarian country that has been raiding the outskirts of the kingdom.

Uncle Negro, who was an experienced mage in the army, was to assume the rank of Chief Magic Director. It was a call of duty that he could not refuse. So he and Ryanna quickly packed a few essentials and set off on Uncle Negros wagon. A few days later they arrived in the City of Var rock. Where they settled temporarily to wait for the attack. While Uncle Negro chatted with his old friends in bars Ryanna wandered off to explore the city.

She was amazed at how crowded and noisy it was compared to her quiet little home village. One day she was walking about the marketplace when a bear of a man came suddenly out of nowhere and snatched her handbag containing her mothers pendant. She screamed as the man ran into the crowd. She pursued the man, casting freezing spells as she went and leaving a trail of petrified people behind her. The man ran out of the city and into the woods, with Ryanna hot on his heels. However as soon as they entered the woods the man disappeared.

Ryanna tried in vain to find him, but it was no use. She was...
