All historical film is fictional, at once a representation of an interpretation that passes for an explanation of history. The best film that represents this is Glory. Film reflects certain values and cultures in society. Though some films such as Glory, do teach history to a degree. Although there a many accurate facts there are some fictional characters as well as events either because the truth is dull or too controversial or because there is no written document or no evidence giving details and that serves as an explanation for a good film. When Colonial Shaw demanded that his black soldiers receive shoes and socks -though it was not an actual fact- interpreted Shaw's respect for his regime.
He represented the strength of his troops that they too could go into battle. It explained to the viewers the hardships and how the black troops were mistreated during the Civil War. Shaw's troops were depicted as all being slaves but in reality many were from the North and they were free and educated. Many of the characters were put into the story line simply to give the audience a feeling of actuality.
The film gives an explanation of history bringing in a world that is unheard of in todays society. It allows in understanding of the hardships of war and of racial prejudgments in that era. Glory is an amazing film but it is also misinformation on actual facts. History is a construction of perspectives.
