Euthanasia. Resting in peace. Euthanasia is the process of peacefully ending the life of a terminally-ill person. This process should be legalized for people who have been suffering in pain for extensive periods of time. If a person wants to end their life with family and friends, they should be allowed to, rather then perhaps dying suddenly with no-one around. The issue of Euthanasia has been around for almost a century, when in 1906 the American state of Ohio drafted a bill allowing the legal suicide of terminally-ill patients.

Whilst this bill was ultimately unsuccessful, it paved the way for many societies and legislation to be introduced, including a Worldwide Euthanasia society, founded in London in 1935. After a period of being illegal around the world, there was then a spur of interest in the issue again. California made the process legal within its state and the nation of the Netherlands also making it legal in its nation in 1984, which it has kept to this day. Columbia and Japan are the only other countries to have legislation to allow Euthanasia.

Many people travel to these places to conclude their life legally. Patients should be able to end their life in a painless environment with family and friends. These people are very selfless as well; their passing would allow these hospital beds to become available for patients who have a chance of recovering and living a normal life. The final choice is the decision of the sufferer, it is their body and they should have the final say on what happens to them. There are many reasons why Euthanasia should become a legal and accepted procedure. Patients who choose to take this course of action suffer diseases ranging from AIDS to ALS (Lou Gherigs Disease).

These diseases basically render most sufferers immobile and leave these people in unbelievable pain. It would much easier for them to end this pain, in the presence of their family and friends. Their final moments would be with loved ones, and the final procedure is painless and peaceful. Why make them suffer in great pain for even more time?

Pro-Euthanasia activists have developed several machines for this procedure, including the most recent which allows the patient to inhale a lethal dose of Carbon Monoxide, this machine allows the user to die in a quick and painless death, much like falling asleep. This is a much better choice than finally passing in a great deal of pain. The machines would also let the person die with dignity, as they are expecting the death and they can say their final goodbyes, rather than suddenly passing and being alone for your final moments on Earth. Choosing this method of dying is also being very kind to other people.

This person is being selfless without even perhaps realizing it. Many are too sick to move and are confined to a hospital bed or a constant visit to make sure they are ok. When a patient chooses to voluntarily die, they are freeing beds which can in turn be used for emergency patients and people who are healthy and can recover. So, not only are these people helping themselves, they are also helping others. Hospitals often promote Euthanasia, with Physician-assisted suicide occurring quite often, the doctor simply turns off life support, or gives the patient a lethal dose of Morphine. Most cases are justified and police rarely investigate.

However, an excelled example of physician-assisted suicide is the famous practice of Dr. Jack Kevorkian. In March 1999, he was convicted of second-degree murder and the delivery of a controlled substance for assisting in the death of a terminally ill patient. He received a 25 year maximum jail sentence for ending the life of someone who was suffering. How is this fair? He will now spend at least 10 years of his life in a prison for helping someone going through great pain.

The illegality of this practice is unjustified, with the greatest argument saying that God put man on Earth and he controls whether they die or not. This is purely ridiculous, as citizens are putting patients through great pain for the reason that an unproved power should be controlling their life. Religion should take no part in such a discussion; a person should have full control of their life and their choice to die. Governments should take a more liberal view on this issue, and not let people suffer purely on the reason that the Church does not agree to such practices.

If we listened to the Church, the gay community would be condemned all around the world. In concluding, Euthanasia is a humane and fair way to end someones life. I know if I was in pain for the majority of my life, Id choose to rest in piece rather than writer in pain. When animals are in extreme pain, the most humane choice for them is to be put down.

People around the world support the putting down of animals, but when it comes to people ending their suffering, they dont believe in it. Whose life is it anyway?
