Born in a farm near Dearborn, Michigan, on July 30 th of 1863, Henry Ford, an American industrial businessman, was known for his innovating methods in the motor industry. According to what History suggests, he was an excellent businessman. He made a great fortune. But workers did not agree with his being such a good man. In 1903, he created the Ford Motor Industry and in 1913 he introduced in his factory the assembly line system. This novelty was a success for him.

These new ideas reduced production costs because the cars were all painted in the same colour and had the same engines. On the contrary, for the workers this new system was a torture. Their job was extremely monotonous and boring. They always had to do the same thing, taking this, adding this and fastening this.

Their intelligence was not necessary. Although the workers were not enthusiastic at all with working at Ford's factory, it could be said that he really was an excellent businessman. He argued that it was better to sell a large number of cars at a low price than a few at a higher price, so that many could afford them. And he was definitely right. With that belief, the production of Ford cars increased a lot between 1913 - 1921, when it reached the amount of 1, 250, 000 cars produced. And apart from selling lots of cars he helped other industries, like the glass, steel, etc.

grow. As a conclusion, the assembly line system brought progress, popularity and richness to Henry Ford but for the workers it was not such a positive change. This is clearly shown in Arthur Hailey's book called Wheels: Neither pay nor other benefits could change the grim, dispiriting nature of the work. Most of it was physically hard.

But the greatest toll was mental, hour after hour, day after day of deadening boredom. By: Sofa Canavese
