In the relationship between Suyuan and her daughter June, it is one with silence and secrecy.

She continued her mothers legacy by taking her place at the mahjong table after her mother died. Suyuan didnt tell June about her past, she leaves June to uncover her mothers legacy.

When she starts to unfold the mystery of her mothers past, she fills that emptiness inside her. From finally realizing how much her mother suffered in China, June was able to bring back her mothers Chinese heritage in her life. June agreed to fulfill her mothers dream by going back to China to see her long lost sisters. Through her mothers death, June realized who she truly was and who she was destined to be. As a little child her mother would tell her ghost stories that would frighten her. It is not very Americanized for mothers to tell ghost stories to their young daughters. Rose, growing up in America became used to the American ways. Rose married Ted who was American, which makes it harder for her to speak to her mother who is very faithful to the Chinese culture and opposed her marriage with Ted. When An-mei was little her mother had become a concubine and had put shame on her mothers family. An-mei promised herself not to let that happen to Rose.

She truly loved her daughter but couldnt find it in her to say it to Lena. Ying-Ying's daughter Lena would later marry a man named Harold. In the marriage with Harold, Lena would starve herself. Her mother said that, she was so thin, that she could not see her.

The mother stressed about the Chinese heritage, but Waverly, being very Americanized would not let in so easily. When Waverly was small she established a talent in chess. She had become a chess prodigy. She overshadowed her friend Jing-Mei who tried but unsuccessfully to a prodigy of her own in piano. The problem was is that Lindo liked to show off her daughter, but Waverly didnt like what her mother was doing and was embarrassed by it. As she grew older the mother and daughter grew separate from each other.

They each believed in their own ways, the mother in her Chinese ways and the daughter in her American ways. As time passed, Waverly slowly started to accept her mothers ways. In time both got along together well and believed in themselves that they could do anything. In the story the main goal of the mothers is that they wanted to establish a brighter future for their daughters but also wanted them to be true to themselves and remember their mothers true ethnicity. The daughters on the other hand were so caught up in being too optimistic that they began to lose their true sense of identity. They became too much Americanized to believe in their true Chinese ethnicity.

This is what caused the majority of the arguments between mother and daughter. The daughters eventually trusted their own hearts and began to undergo the process of healing the differences they endured with their mother, which was separating them from having a good relationship. They left it up to faith to steer them in the right direction. Bibliography:
