The Life of General Stonewall Jackson by Mary L. Williamson recounts the major things that happened in Thomas J. Jacksons life that led him to be known as one of the greatest generals in Americas history. Thomas Jonathan Stonewall Jackson was born on January 21, 1824, in Clarksburg, Virginia. Although he had parents, they died during the young years of his life. After the death of his parents Thomas J.

Jackson was sent to uncle after uncle, until one of the uncles decided to raise this furious young lad. At the age of seventeen, Jackson started to look for a job. After a few days later, he accepted an offer to be a constable for Lewis County. A year later, he was to soon start his journey towards being one of the best military leader of the At the age of eighteen, he rode on horse back to the city Washington to be trained at the United States Military Academy, West Point. After he graduated from West Point, he soon found himself in the Mexican War. In that battle Jackson was placed in the light artillery which used small cannons and were capable of moving rapidly from place to place.

This job was just what he wanted, because the light artillery service, though more dangerous, gave him a better chance to win the honors for w ch his soul thirsted. At the end of this battle with the Mexicans, because of his brave acts, he was made Major of Artillery. Because of that, it made his soul thirstier for more fame and honor. As you can see he was not a Christian during his early yea in the military life, because he put fame in front of Christ. In the Spring of 1861, the War Between the States broke out. Major Jackson was ordered to take his cadets down to Harpers Ferry so that they will be drilled and trained.

Soon Jacksons army numbered to four thousand five hundred men. A few days later, April 21, Major Jackson was made Colonel of the Virginia forces. Sadly, on the second of May, Virginia formally joined the Southern Confederacy and handed over the control of all her soldiers to that government, which bound itself in r urn to defend Virginia and to pay her troops. When the Southern government sent General J. E. Johnston to take place of Colonel Jackson, Jackson was made commander of the brigade which became the famous Stonewall Brigade.

Another battle took place, which again advanced Jackson to the position of a general. By the time Jackson was to fight his last battle, he was next to the highest rank in the service, Lieutenant General. He was also a very good Christian. The last battle that he fought was the Battle of Chancellorsville.

He was very brave in this battle, because of that, the Confederates won the battle. At 8: 00 p. m. , a few hours after the battle, Jackson decided to advance forward and fight General Rode's. But on his way there, a terrible thing happened. Jackson who was ahead of the advancing army, saw that the enemy was coming towards them very quickly. Turning, he rode back rapidly towards his own line.

The Southern pickets who were lying hid in the thickets, thinking that Jackson and his staff were a Northern squad, opened fire. They killed two staff members, hurt others and General Jackson himself was badly wounded. Jackson died a few days later, from a disease that derived from the wound. I loved this wonderful account of General Jackson. I have read another book by this author with was just as good as this one.

This book reminded me that if you do things to the glory of God and not for the glory of thyself, you will succeed in life. Be use of that Jackson died with honor that was in abundance. This book should be read by other people that love books about great generals and leaders. Bibliography:
