In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, there are many themes that are presented. The story takes place on an island, that is said to be shaped like a boat. One theme that is included in the story is that the fear of the unknown can eventually case a stage of hysteria in people. Though many themes, there is the basic theme also. Society holds everyone together and without it, the basics of right and wrong are lost.

A plane crashes carrying a boys choir after being shot down and it starts the mans destruction on the island. Everyone survives and rules are set down and Ralph is to be chief. Several rules are made up and expected to be followed. One such rule is making a signal fire. The first attempt in starting a fire ended with burning half of the forest.

Arguments soon arise between Ralph and Jack. Jack feels that hunting is the most important issue and Ralph feels that the signal fire is the most important. When a ship is spotted in the distance, Ralph detects that the signal fire was not lit. He mentions that the rules are not being followed and that work is not getting done. The other children start worrying about something else. They call it the Beast and they believe it as being some kind of animal living with them on the island.

During an assembly. Jack tries to convince everyone that Ralph is not a good chief. He also starts to become more savage and overpowering. Everyone starts splitting up into two sections, those that follow Ralph and those that follow Jack. Ralph starts seeing their actions turning almost barbaric. An assembly is called and Jack insists on hunting the Beast.

Jack also tries to get the children to turn against Ralph, but is unsuccessful. When the boys decide to move the signal fire, Ralph sees that many of the older boys do go with Jack. They hunt and kill a mother sow. They implant the head in the ground as a gift to the Beast. The head becomes covered in flies and is now called The Lord of the Flies. Ralph checks in on Jack and his followers.

Jack asks everyone to confirm their loyalty to him and Ralph tries to persuade them to follow him. Most of the boys are already overcome by Jacks leadership. As Jack and his group begin to take part in a ritual, they are distracted by a figure in the jungle. They begin to attack it only to find that it is Simon. They carry his beaten and dead body out to sea. Ralph is woken in the night by Jack wanting Piggy's glasses so his tribe can start fires.

It turns into a fight for the glasses. Ralph goes to Jack for the glasses and Jack laughs at his request for them back. A fight begins and Piggy speaks up and ceases the fighting. Roger slams a lever holding a boulder and sends it down, hitting Piggy. He tells Ralph that he will be next and Ralph runs away with everyone left to follow Jack. Jack finds Ralph and tries to push him out of his hiding place, but fails.

They set the area on fire. Ralph begins to run from the fire and to the beach. He almost crashes into a Naval officer standing on the beach, who had seen the smoke and fire. He assumes that their stay on the island was fun for the boys. Bibliography:
