When I found out that colleges around the nation blocked the use of napster from all students I was very angry. Not only did they take away a students freedom of expression but also their constitutional rights as individuals. They need to review the constitution over again. What students in that situation need to do is get petitions going around their college campuses, letters in the email to send to congress and the school staff to let them unblock the usage of napster and keep the online music community around for good. One of the recording industry's arguments was that since people were using the songs off napster to burn their own Cds instead of going out and spending their money on Cds made by a music company. The greedy music industry thinks that it is getting ripped off, well I disagree.
I do admit that I buy less Cds than I used to and napster has something to do with that but I still do buy Cds. See, when I hear a really good song on the radio or something I download it onto my computer to keep around and sometimes if it makes the cut I will put it on a Cd of my own. When a band comes out with a new Cd for the most part people don't like every song on it. I have eliminated the problem of changing every other song by making a Cd of only songs that I like. If I know that a band is coming out with a new Cd and that I like that band I will go out and buy their album for the music and if nothing else just to support the band. All these bands that are against napster have no support from me any longer.
Serves them right, they still make tons of money off of concerts, maybe more than ever due to an increase in number of people that have access to their music online. A few months ago I heard a good song from a band so I went out and got their Cd. The songs that are on my computer are listened to a lot and the good thing is that they don't get scratched or anything like a Cd would therefore making them last forever... or until I delete them.
Cds are expensive and they scratch really easily, so I keep the mp 3 s on my computer as a back up or the original. On the other hand another good issue that was brought to my attention was that colleges have to pay for bandwidth on the Internet. My college has a really bad parking arrangement. My professor told me that our college could either buy more bandwidth or get bigger parking lots.
Touch call but if you want a parking space, get to the school earlier you lazy people. Cds are expensive, let us have our music community, it isn't hurting any of the fat executives of the record industry. If the bands would support napster they would actually get more money in my eyes. People love the bands that are supporters of napster and it has brought them much more publicity than they would have gotten from their record companies advertisers. Napster has even launched some small town bands careers.
They would be nowhere without it. Limp Bizkit has more fans now because of napster support than ever. More money has been thrown their way than ever would have without napster and the people that support it. If Napster goes down then the people will not be happy and I can bet that there will be a massive protest. It is not just students and kids that use Napster: in fact I was informed by a source today that the record companies haven't lost near the amount of money that they claim to have lost and some have made a little more because of the publicity napster brings to their artists. Come on people, napster isn't the anti-Christ it is a file sharing community.
As long as the Internet is around then file sharing will take place and there is nothing that the government or the universities can do to fix it. You just can't stop us. Give up.
