The Civil War was one of the events that added to the rich history of the United States capitol. The Civil War started in April 12, 1861 through April 9, 1865. It took more American lives then any other war in history. It divided the people, in some families fought against there own brothers.

The war was between the Southern States and the Northern States. The Southern States were trying to preserve slavery and an agricultural way of life, and the Northern States dedicated to a more modern day of life and to ending slavery. The terrible bloodshed left a heritage of grief and bitterness that only declined slowly and, even today, it has not fully disappeared yet. The civil war was also called The War between States and The War of Secession.

The Southern State troops fired first at the Fort Sumter, in the U. S. military post in Charleston, South Carolina. The compromise of 1850 was that a group of acts passed down by Congress in hope to stop or settle the slavery conflict.

Giving some satisfaction to both of the states to compromise that slavery should still go on, but prohibited in the slave trade in Washington D. C. They admitted California to be a free state in the Union but they got acquired territories. They get to decide the right to permit slavery in that particular state. The Abolitionist disobeyed the law by operating the Underground Railroad, a system of routes and a housing for run away slaves to escape.

The routes let from slave states to Canada and the free states. A number of rescue attempts that the abolitionist did resulted in riots and in several deaths. Development in the political party system In the Kansas- Nebraska act they found a Republican Party in the North in 1854. The republicans considered slavery evil in many ways and opposed its extention in the Western territories. Many Whigs and Democrats members of the two largest parties-joined the new parties.

They included Abraham Lincoln, a former Whig. In the Republican Partys, the first presidential candidate was John C. Fremont. He won the most Northern vote and almost won the presidency in 1856. In 1858, the democrats was divided over a constitution that proslavery Kansans hoped to adopted, when Kansas territory become a state. Two of the party leaders, Senator Stephen A.

Douglas of Illinois and President James Buchanan took opposite positions on the constitution. The conflict between proslavery and antislavery caused Democratic Party to split into two in Northern and Southern branches in 1860. The Republican Party voted Lincoln to become their candidate in 1860 for presidential election. Douglas ran for the Northern Democratic ticket and Vice President John C. Breckinridge was the Southern Democratic candidate.

Some of the Whig and know-nothing parties-which had disbanded by 1860 - formed a constitutional Union Party and nominated former senator John Bell of Tennessee. Lincoln won ever electoral vote of every free state, but not New Jersey, which awarded him four of seven votes. He gained a very high majority of electoral votes and won the election. Lincoln received less then 40 percent for the popular vote. There almost was no people who voted from the Southern side. The Southern people feared Lincoln because he would restrict or end slavery.

In conclusion, I think the capitol walls would talk about the Civil War, because it has great information and tells you about history and what happened in this particular war. This war tells you who is fighting and getting elected for president or being a Whig. There was some famous people who where in this war and made our American history. Bibliography:
