It is wrong to conclude that Jane Austen lived during an uneventful period in history. Her short life took place in the reign of George III and had several important events and changes as its background (Sherry 10) She is known for her witty and penetrating portrayals of provincial society (Austen). It is possible to understand, or misunderstand Jane Austen's works, for her art is such that one can only read on the surface and miss much of what exists underneath (Sherry 10). Jane Austen's life and novels have influenced movies based on the content of her books. Jane Austen daughter of Cassandra Leigh Austen was born on December 16, 1775, in a small village called Stevenson in England (Austen).

Jane was the seventh of eight children in an extraordinarily close, affectionate, intelligent, and lively family (Austen). Her father was a rector, so many of Janes years were spent at a rectory. When Jane was about seven she and her sister Cassandra went through several years of formal education, first at a private school in Oxford and then at Southampton and later at the Abbey School in Reading (Magill 110). By the time she was nine, Jane was back at home again and her formal education had come to and end (Sherry 14). The person Jane was closest to within her family was her older sister Cassandra.

They were three years apart and the only girls among the eight children (Magill 112). For their education after that the sisters must have depended largely upon their father and brothers, the cultured atmosphere of their home, and their contacts with relatives. This did not provide them with poor education, in their home they were always encouraged to read. This reading was not only to oneself, but aloud as a family entertainment, with all the discussions and criticisms (Sherry 14). Jane Austen had also the traditional accomplishments of the female of her days sang, played the piano, and drew (Sherry 15).

Jane entered into several brief romantic attachments, but she never got married (Magill 112). During a visit to Devonshire, she met a young man to whom she was much attracted, but he died soon afterwards (Sherry 17). Austen's writing life is less easily chronicled. Inspired by her own love of reading, Austen began writing at the age of twelve (Magill 112). Jane Austen was writing at a time when the novel was extremely popular, her works were written against a background of family travels, misfortunes and gaieties. Some of her novels were also influenced by a number of romances and flirtations that she experienced (Sherry 17).

Many of her books were influenced by events that happened to her throughout her life. Evenings in her home were often spent discussing works by the leading novelists of the day. Among Janes favorite authors were Henry Fielding, Samuel Richardson, and Fanny Burney, and references to their work appear in both her letters and her won novels (Magill 110). Jane Austen never married, therefore she never had any children. There was one time in which she accepted a proposal of marriage, but the following morning decided that she could not marry simply from worldly motives, without love, and had changed her mind (Sherry 20).

To her nieces and nephews, Jane was an amusing, interesting and animated speaker, subject to fits of laughter (Wright). She enjoyed the company of children, and with so many nieces and nephews she was able to enjoy the pleasure to the full (Wright). But the effort of composition took its toll. She began to suffer from back pains and fits of utter fatigue and weariness (Wright). Jane Austen did not know that she was suffering from the early stages of Addison's Disease. The doctors did not know what she had, and in May 1817 she was advised to move to Winchester to consult a Dr.

Lord. Her loving sister Cassandra was with her every step of the way. Janes condition gradually deteriorated and on the third week of July she was told she did not have long to live. On the evening of July 17 she fell unconscious and at 4: 30 in the morning of July 18, 1817, Jane Austen died, her head pillowed on Cassandras shoulder (Wright). She was 41 (Wright).

One of English literatures greatest writers, Austen captures the subtleties of human nature and social interaction with satiric wit and a prcis, elegant style (Magill 110). Pride and Prejudice is one of the most popular of all novels in English, and merits its popularity. It is Jane Austen's first undoubted masterpiece: for the first time, she is in full control of her attitudes and her resources; her powers of characterization are unimpeded by moralistic misgivings; the subject releases her comic genius and her sympathies simultaneously (Austen). Jane Austen was a great writer and maybe if she would have lived longer we would have many more very interesting books and novels to read. Perhaps we would have more interesting movies to watch.
