In American Asian Indians form one of the smallest minorities, yet in their homeland has the largest population in the world. America was influenced by their beliefs before the first immigrant. Many of the Indians came to American as early as the turn of the century, in which they where denied citizenship until a congressional act granted it in 1946 (Lee 106). Most of them are now artists, writers, musicians, and scientists.
Asian Indians have supplied numerous contributions to the culture and immaculate being of US; majorities of these contributions regulate to the science field. Asian Indians immigrated in the period of 1830 - 1890. In this time India was in admirable shape. However the British took over India, they emptied the country of all her wealth and forced the Indians to leave. America at this time was a strong magnet to immigrants, with offers of jobs and religious freedom (Takaki 42). Consequently, America was referred to many countries as the " Land of Opportunity. " (43) This reference glazed into the eyes of Asian Indians; therefore, in research came to America for opportunities.
Many Asian Indians faced hardships upon their arrival. In recent years, Asians have been among the victims of violence fueled by prejudice (42). While many of these people have become self-employed entrepreneurs by choice, others have found themselves pushed into self- employment by discrimination. Similarly, an Asian Indian engineer who had worked for a company for some twenty years told his friend, "They [management] never give you [Asian Indians] an executive position in the company. You can only go up so high and no more (Lee 69). " Frustrated by limited opportunities to advance in their careers, many Asian Indian professionals have turned to opening their own businesses (70). For Indians to see the racist acts towards them hurts and not to be able to show there true talent.
Assimilation has been a powerful source in American life, particularly in policies and attitudes towards immigrants in the twentieth century (Brands 23). Furthermore, members of American minorities had learned that assimilation is not an all-or nothing processes (Bagai 12). To complete the process, the enterprising minority individual must jump through several hoops (Brands 23). Similarly, all immigrant groups have faced the question of whether they should cling to their cultural roots or try to become " American" as quickly as possible (24).
Assimilation-blending into the larger society-has been more difficult for Asian immigrants than for European ones, for Asians can be identified for by their physical appearance even when there clothing, speech, and actions have been completely Americanized (Bagai 74). India has made many contributions and many people have contributed them. For more than hundred years, America had enjoyed India's written philosophies. In 1893 Swami Vivekananda came to the US from the Parliament of Religions (76). His eloquence and enthusiasm made him one of the most popular speakers. Gobindram Jhamandas was born in 1891 in Sind, he established the Watumull Foundation, which has built educational links between India and America (Takaki 2 34).
Many contributions have been made threw the years, a list can go on and on, these contributions have been made by the people who have been so persistent. India's most important contribution is in the science field, for they have put earth and the space in line. Theirs not limit to there knowledge in science. Dr.
Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar; an astrophysicist who contributed to enable us to study internal constitution of stars (Takaki 2 32). Which connects the earth to the space and tells us more about what's out there. Dr. Harbans L. Arora; biologist from Rockefell Institute, his works will tell us more about man's brain Memory systems and his behavior (Takaki 2 34). His work enables us to work in depth in learning about a human's train of thought and mind.
Dr. Har Gobbind Khorana a; his scientific research has helped in solving mysteries of the genetic code. Some of thesis codes are cancer, infectious diseases, and the aging process. Someone has to start somewhere to learn about thesis genetic codes. Back in the day's eyes was one of the biggest concerns for some people who age.
I know for Indians it is a big concern even theses days. However, Dr. Narinder Sinh Kapany, a graduate of the Walumall Foundation invented an instrument that performs eye operations. In which he was awarded honors for his invention of this instrument. An instrument like this can help so many people and save so many peoples eyes. Eyes are something that a human depends on, without eyes its a whole different world.
Today Asian Indians are contributing in everything for genetics to the constitution of the stars. Indians have changed a lot for American and have brought their heritage along. According to Indians the plans was let's go settle in American make money and come back. Instead they settled here made families and changed USA in the process.
Building their own businesses, working in hospitals and working in universities has changed the future of USA. Some have changed there beliefs from there eastern to the western and in this process they changed USA in teaching US about the culture and making a multicultural society to live in. Living both Indian and American life's can be frustrating at times when can't decide to go by which rules and what to think and feel. For some parents, pray that their children don't lose their culture in them.
